USE OF ENGLISH FIRST LECTURE

GRAMMATICAL RULES OR CONVENTIONS


         They are the guide lines governing the correct use of words and expression in any language.
"conventional law are laws that are fixed".
"the rules are not written in a particular place but are used".

        Language is a system of a human vocal sound, arbitrary signs, conventional symbols, body movements, colours, pictures e.t.c that we use to express our thoughts, emotions, feelings and ideas.

language is divided into two forms:

1. Verbal: which is divided into oral sound (hiss, cat walk, whistling, laughter, cry), and speech.

2. Non-verbal: divided into colours, writing, body movement, sign languages.

THE FOUR SKILL OF LANGUAGE

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Listening. 
Oral sound are the vocal sound or forms of language that engages our vocal sounds but are not articulated. Speech is the articulation of the human vocal sounds to express our thoughts, opinions, emotions, and ideas.

     A phrase is a group of word that does not have a finite verb.
    A phrase is a group of word that does not express a complete thought. 

Levels of Language.
  •  Phrase
  • Clause
  • Sentences

"A word is a cluster of letters to express a meaning" or a systematic grouping or clustering of letters to express a meaning"

"A morpheme is the smallest meaningful unit of expression in a language". A word is also called a morpheme.

A phrase is not meaningless e.g
1. The girl.



Assignment.

  • Study and write on phrases clauses and sentences.
