SECOND LECTURE ON USE OF ENGLISH

     A clause is a group of word that may express a complete thoughts.
we have two types:
1. The dependent Clause. 
2. The independent Clause.

1. The dependent Clause: contains a finite verb but does not express a complete thought e.g 
  • when i get home 
  • as soon as Bola arrives
2. The independent clause is a group of word that expresses a complete thought. The independence or main-clause can also serve as a simple sentence e.g.
i. i will arrange my wall drop and pic cloth for the party.
     Adding the dependent clause makes it a sentence. e.g 
a. as soon as Bola arrives, we will go parting.

Types of clauses according to content.
1. Noun clause


SENTENCE

The sentence is a group of word that expresses a complete thought.
  • Types of sentences according to function.
1. Interrogative sentence (interrogatory): This is the group of words used to make enquires or ask questions.

    There are different types of questions which some takes a question mark.
i. Polar question
ii. Historic question

2. Imperative sentence: Is a group of word used to give an order or instruction.
e.g. you may take your leave now.

3. Declarative sentence: is a group of words used to express an opinion or make a statement "its other name is statement". The declarative sentence is not asking a question, it is taking a sentence as the speaker says it. e.g.
  • Micheal is a girl.
  • Dapo is the most handsome man in the class.
4. Exclamatory sentence: This is the group of words used to express the sudden release of emotions.


Based on content we have:

  • Simple Sentence
  • Complex Sentence
  • Compound Sentence
  • Complex-compound sentence
  • Multiple Sentence

1. Simple Sentence: is a sentence that express a single thought or idea e.g.
  • She's Beautiful.
2. Complex Sentence: is a group of word that expresses a single with a additional information or with details. it contains a main clause and a subordinate clause.

3. Compound Sentence: is a group of word that expresses two complete thought linked by a conjunction or a punctuation. e.g.
  • Bola is shy, but bola is an extrovert.
  • I will clean the house and cook dinner.
4. Complex-Compound Sentence: is a group of word that expresses at least two ideas at most three with details. e.g.
  • once exams are over, i will visit my grandmother and help her with farm work.
5. multiple sentence: is a sentence which has three (3) or more main, independent or alpha clauses with no subordinate or dependent clause. Each of these clauses can stand on its own as a simple sentence

3. write everything Figure of speech.
